Hi, we are Ash and Becky. Thank you for taking an interest in our blog! Horses have been a big part of our lives, as we horse ride regularly, so naturally trying to help abandoned and neglected horses is something we feel very strongly about. Although many people do know that horses are neglected and mistreated in the UK and other big countries such as America, most do not know the severity of this issue. Also, a lot of people do not know about the issues with mistreated horses in other countries, such as India and Africa. By the end of this blog, we hope to inform you about our charity, World Horse Welfare, make you more aware of the problems caused by mistreatment of horses so that you feel you want to support World Horse Welfare.
World Horse Welfare helps thousands of horses a year like Ollie. Ollie was abandoned in a tiny pen with sixty-six other horses. Ollie and his companions were left without water or food. Many died in the pen. This was not fair on the horses, and they had done nothing wrong. Do they really deserve this?
Luckily, World Horse Welfare came to the rescue. When they got to the pen, they were astounded at the conditions of the horses. Around seven had died, and many more had to be put down there and then, because they were too ill. Lots of the horses had Strangles: a disease that horses can get where their throats swell up, eventually causing them to be suffocated, or strangled (as the name suggests).
Even though most of the horses were in terrible conditions and close to death, World Horse Welfare did not give up. They took the remaining horses back to one of their four centres in the UK and worked with them. Now, Ollie and the other horses abandoned are loving happy lives, some at the World Horse Welfare centre, others at different places, after being rehomed. Thanks to World Horse Welfare, Ollie and his friends were given a second chance and a better life.
