Save the children-save the future. Education is the key.

Thank you very much for showing an interest in my blog! I am Abbie, and I am trying to raise awareness on behalf on the brilliant charity ‘Pencils of Promise’. I feel very strongly about children in Less Economically Developed Countries receiving a decent education. I hope that, by reading my blog, you will be interested in helping pencils of promise to raise awareness and money so that they can carry on with their amazing goals.

La Corneta is a small, rural community wedged between the outer limits of the departments of Matagalpa and Jinotega in one of the North’s most arid zones. Before the highway opened up just three years ago, this community was landlocked and most of the farmers could not easily transport their produce. Some students still arrive to school on horseback, though most walk the to the two room school. Even though the new road has increased accessibility and the chances for further development, the community still receives little attention from government officials, including help with installation of a functioning water system. Despite the struggles that La Corneta has had to overcome, the community has a history of involvement and commitment as evidenced by the effort they made in constructing a community well several years ago. The community is soliciting the construction of one preschool classroom for the 25 students that currently receive class in an uncovered space outside. Originally, the preschool class was sharing space with the existing primary school classroom, but the overcrowding and the mix of older children with the youngest children made instruction and classroom management very difficult.  The school would also like help constructing a “comedor”- a sheltered space where the 72 students can sit together to eat their lunch.

The community is very excited about the project and has already formed a Promise Committee and is working on a schedule for their volunteer workers. 72 children are able to attend this preschool; this means that 72 young lives are able to build a future.

Thank you so much again for taking an interest in my blog. Please feel free to leave a comment below expressing your thoughts. It would be particularly helpful if you could write a few words in response to the following questions, and help in any way you feel that you can. 1. Where do you come from? (town, country)
  2. Had you previously heard of pencils of promise?
  3. Do you now feel more informed about the charity and their work?
  4. Would you now consider donating to pencils of promise?
Many thanks,
    Abbie
