End the awful, appalling abuse on Asian Elephants

Thank you for opening our blog; Based entirely on saving the Asian elephants. Our charity, the Elephant Family is the biggest elephant charity in England, and fights for Asian elephants. Based in London, it raises money and works closely with 12 smaller charities over Asia. They work hard all year round, to raise as much money as they can as every week, every day, innocent elephants are dying.

But why should you care?

There aren’t many reasons for us to hate Asian elephants; they don’t harm us unless we harm them. The simple fact is innocent elephants are dying and can human conscience really sit back and watch that happen. In the past 10 years, 80%-90% of the population has been wiped out. In the next 30 years they could disappear altogether.

We need to act now.

There is, and never will be, enough space. The human population is growing, and free land for elephants to graze and live on is shrinking. Without any space, elephant’s raid farmer’s crops resulting in farmers acting violent towards elephants (this is called human/elephant conflict). Elephant are widely hated in areas as they are widely known to injure or even kill people, which can give them a bad name.

But is it all really their fault?

Elephants need somewhere to live, just like you and me. They need food to eat and places to explore. If you were homeless and constantly moving around, and you found some land full of food and shelter, wouldn’t you make the most of it? Farmers don’t see this though, and get angry at the elephants; the consequence shown clearly on the photo above.

So what can we do?

Corridors; a safe place for elephants to pass through, from one forest to another. No farmers, no poachers, just a safe passageway for elephants. Elephant Family are aiming to make as many corridors as possible, but they have only just started. Already they have raised so much money; in the past year over 5 million. But there is lots of work to do. Only by hard work and commitment have they raised these types of amounts. But funding is vital to keep the Asian Elephants alive.
The Elephant family need supporting; the more people who raise awareness for this tragic story, the more hope the future will hold. Only 100,000 signatures; that’s the amount the Elephant family needs to take their case to the government. Follow the link and do your bit – http://www.elephantfamily.org/sign-our-petition

To help with our studies, we would be thankful if you could please answer the following questions. It would be great if you could please leave your hometown and country, or even just your country, as then we can see who is visiting, reading, and posting on our blog to help with our research.

1. Have you heard of the charity Elephant Family before?
2. Do you now, after reading our blog, feel more informed of this issue?
3. Would you be prepared to donate/support to the charity in any way (for example; signing the online petition which only takes a few minutes)

Once again, thank you very much.

Hannah and Georgie.

  5. Your blog is very good and informative :)

    1) I hadnt heard of the charity before, it was very shocking about the issues that occur.

    3) I would sign the petition as i feel that it is worth it. however i am not sure how much i would donate (of course i would donate something!!) as i feel that i would rather donate to a childrens charity, but if i was choosing an animal charity then this one is definately worthwhile :D

Thank you for a very informative blog ;) x

  6. Good blog, concise and concerned.

    1. I did not know about the charity.
    2. Yes, a lot, I was unaware of the nature of the problem. I also checked the charity's website to know how many elephants are left.
Btw, I saw the pace of extinction is quite a bit slower: 90% in the last 100 years have disappeared (not last 10 years), which doesn't make it less urgent, but it is good to get the fact right, because 'enviromentalists' are always accused of exagerating things.
    3. I signed.

  7. I have never heard of Elephant Family before, nor is it an issue of which I was aware. It's interesting to learn about and your blog is very readable and well written.
I do feel more informed now- and will certainly look at the website with a view to signing the online petition and possibly making a small donation.

  9. Thanks for you feedback. Keep commenting! We would like to state that there was an error in our blog and the Asian Elephant population have decreased by 90% over the last 100 years. Sorry for the typing error!
    Thank you.

  10. I had not heard of Elephant Family previously and do feel that your blog has provided me with the simple sad facts.

I do not sign petitions as have had to regret doing so on occasions, not liking giving my address to charities they persist in flooding in the requests both mail and e-mail for ever after , even when asked not to.

If I donate it will be anonymously.

3Yes I will visit the website and consider signing the petition and donating although one of your posts has a point about then receiving lots of mail. Is it worth setting up a Just Giving site for your cause so that people can donate that way?

  16. Thanks for you post Jo. There is a "tick" box, so when signing the petition if you do not want to recieve mail from the chairty then do not click it and in return your email will not get clogged up with junk which you do not want.
    Thanks!

  24. Thanks for bringing this to our awareness. Of course, historically we have known there is a problem with hunting elephants, but it goes from our minds with all the other animals and habitats which are threatened and publicised in the media. We tend to think that this issue has been resolved, which we now know needs to be highlighted again.
    Well done

  32. 1. No
    2. I now know what the charity does, but is all they do build corridors? I'd like to know more about issues involved building these corridors and how will this stop them raiding farms - they may have other options but they're still a convinient source of food, and it would be easier to go to the farm then forage.
    3. I'd sign a petition but I don't really care enough to donate.

You could do with someone to read over the blog to make the words flow a little better, but on the whole it isn't a bad effort.

  33. I thought this blog was great and learnt a lot from it. I'll definitely consider supporting the charity. The picture is shocking.
