Paws for thought

Thank you for taking an interest and viewing my blog, I hope you find it interesting and feel more informed about the issue and how you can help.

Many cats and dogs are abandoned and abused each year, most left on the streets to die. This is an increasing issue as less people are currently buying pets due to the credit crunch because they cannot afford to buy and then keep the dog for any length of time, but breeders are still breeding litters of puppies or kittens. This is not so much a problem with cats, as cats aren’t too expensive to keep or to sell but dogs cause a huge problem to breeders when no one is willing to buy them. With not enough people to buy all the puppies bred, often breeders feel they have no choice but to abandon these dogs as they cannot afford the cost of living for their current dogs plus a litter of puppies.

This is where Gables Farm Dogs’ and Cats’ Home come in. You may think that there are lots of charities to take in abandoned dogs and cats such as RSPCA, Dogs Trust or The Blue Cross but, like everywhere else, these charities have limited spaces to the amount of animals they can look after and care for. This is why little charities such as Gables Farm can be extremely helpful because it provides more space and facilities to care and look after abandoned cats and dogs. Also, instead of it having to go to desperate measures of abandonment, Gables Farm will happily take dogs off of peoples hands if they cannot afford or do not have enough time to care for their animal. They will never give up on a healthy dog and never put a dog down, so if they cannot rehome a dog they will keep it until they can find a suitable home for it. To make sure that Gables Farm can help to house these animals, they need donations from people as their funds are limited. They take donations in many ways, such as; sponsor a dog or cat pen, supporters club, corporate sponsoring, general donations and they also have a gift shop on site.

Shady’s Story
This is the story of Shady (above), an 8 year old Staffordshire bull terrier who fought for his life after being abused and abandoned in a field. Shady was found by a member of the public, lying in a field. He was weak and could not lift his head and was unable to stand. He had been left there to die. Shady was bought into the Home way past midnight and was rushed straight to the vets, where he was put onto a drip. The vets fought three days and nights to save this poor, defenceless dog. He was half the weight he should be and his temperature was dangerously low. After a week at Gables Farm, Shady had improved dramatically and his cheeky nature began to shine through. 6 weeks later, he had put on 7kg and was almost back to full health.
Without the help of Gables Farm,Shady may never have survived that night. Shady has now found a new loving home and is enjoying life tremendously (below).

  4. I've always been very upset by cruelty to animals, but didn't know there were small charities like this one. It's really good to know they never put a healthy dog to sleep. I'll talk to my family about donating.
